When to choose Standard

SQL Server Standard is the right choice for about 80% of businesses. If your server has 24 cores or fewer, your database is under 100 GB and you do not need automatic failover with Always On Availability Groups, Standard covers everything you need. It includes reporting, .NET integration, multi-instance support and all the transactional features a small or medium business requires. It is the world's best-selling SQL Server edition for a reason: it offers the best balance between functionality and price.

When you need Enterprise

Enterprise is for mission-critical environments where downtime is not acceptable. If you need Always On Availability Groups with automatic multi-node failover, data compression to save storage on tables with millions of rows, or table partitioning for high-performance analytical queries, Enterprise is your edition. It is also required if your server has more than 24 cores or more than 128 GB of RAM allocated to SQL Server.

Tip: If you are not sure, start with Standard. You can always upgrade to Enterprise later. And with our prices, even if you need to switch, the savings compared to the official Microsoft price are enormous on both editions.

Which SQL Server version should you choose? Guide 2016 to 2025

Microsoft releases a new major version of SQL Server every 3 to 4 years. Each version receives extended support for 10 years. Here is what each one offers and how long it is supported.

Version Year Support ends Key features Recommended for
SQL Server 2016 2016 July 2026 Temporal tables, JSON, R Services, Always Encrypted, ColumnStore in Standard Only if your application specifically requires it. Support expires soon.
SQL Server 2017 2017 October 2027 Native Linux support, Graph DB, Adaptive Query Processing, Python in ML Services Linux environments or applications certified for 2017.
SQL Server 2019 2019 January 2030 Intelligent Query Processing, Big Data Clusters, native UTF-8 Best value for money. Support until 2030, mature feature set.
SQL Server 2022 2022 January 2033 Azure integration, Ledger (blockchain), improved Query Store, Link feature Recommended for new installations. Longest support, modern features.
SQL Server 2025 2025 ~2035 Built-in AI, vector search, Copilot, 32 cores in Standard If you need AI capabilities and vector search built into the database engine.

Our recommendation

For new installations: SQL Server 2022. It offers the best performance, the most complete feature set and support until 2033. The Azure integration — even if you do not need it now — gives you future flexibility for hybrid cloud/on-premise scenarios at no additional cost.

For the best balance of price and functionality: SQL Server 2019. It has support until 2030, includes Intelligent Query Processing (which automatically improves performance without code changes) and costs less than the newer versions.

Coming from SQL Server 2016? Extended support ends in July 2026. Now is the ideal time to migrate to 2022 or 2019. A licence from La Tienda de las Licencias costs a fraction of what you would pay for one year of Microsoft Software Assurance, and you get a version with support until 2030 or 2033.

How does SQL Server licensing work?

SQL Server licensing can seem complex. Here is a clear explanation so you know exactly what you need to buy.

Core-based licensing (the main model since 2012)

Since SQL Server 2012, the primary licensing model is per physical processor core. The minimum is 4 cores per physical processor, sold in 2-core packs. If your server has an 8-core processor, you need four 2-core packs. In practice, our Standard licences with 24 cores included cover the vast majority of enterprise servers without needing additional core packs. The 2025 Standard edition increases this to 32 cores included.

CALs (Client Access Licences)

If you only need to give access to a small number of users or devices, you can also licence SQL Server using CALs (Client Access Licences). You need one server licence plus one CAL per user or device that accesses SQL Server. We have User CALs and Device CALs available for SQL Server 2022.

What is included with each licence you buy here?

Every licence includes a genuine Microsoft product key that allows you to download SQL Server directly from the official Microsoft servers and install it. Activation is online and permanent. There are no subscriptions and no recurring payments: once you activate your licence, it is yours forever.

Legal framework: CJEU ruling C-128/11

The resale of software licences within the European Union is protected by the ruling of the Court of Justice of the EU (case C-128/11, UsedSoft vs. Oracle, July 2012). This ruling established that the principle of exhaustion of the distribution right applies to software acquired legitimately, whether on physical media or by digital download. All our licences originate from legitimate enterprise surplus and comply with this legal framework. La Tienda de las Licencias is a registered Spanish company that issues official invoices with full tax details.

Need Windows Server too? 2025 vs. 2022 comparison

SQL Server runs on Windows Server (or Linux). If you also need the server operating system, here is a comparison of the two most recent versions. Both are available in our store with the same level of savings.

Feature Windows Server 2022 Standard Windows Server 2025 Standard
Security Secured-core, TLS 1.3, DNS-over-HTTPS Improved Secured-core, delegated RBAC, enhanced Credential Guard
Storage Storage Spaces Direct, SMB compression Improved NVMe, Block Cloning, enhanced deduplication
Containers Kubernetes support Improved Kubernetes, reduced image size
Hybrid management Azure Arc Hotpatch (no reboots), improved Azure Arc, SMB over QUIC
Active Directory Standard AD DS Password policy improvements, functional level 2025
Cores included 24 cores 24 cores
Extended support ends October 2031 ~2035

Which one? If you are building a new server, Windows Server 2025 gives you the most modern features and the longest support. If you want the best price and your environment does not need the 2025 improvements, Windows Server 2022 is a solid choice with support until 2031.

Combined savings on SQL Server + Windows Server: The official Microsoft price for SQL Server 2022 Standard + Windows Server 2022 Standard exceeds $5,000 USD. Buying both licences from La Tienda de las Licencias, your total savings can exceed 90%. View Windows Server licences

Frequently asked questions about SQL Server

How much does a SQL Server licence cost?

The official Microsoft price for SQL Server 2022 Standard is $3,945 USD per 2-core pack. SQL Server Enterprise goes up to $15,123 USD for the same pack. At La Tienda de las Licencias, SQL Server licences cost up to 95% less than those official prices. The exact price in your currency is shown directly on each product on this page.

Is it legal to buy SQL Server licences at this price?

Yes. The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in case C-128/11 (UsedSoft vs. Oracle, July 2012) that the resale of software licences is legal within the EU, provided the original buyer has deactivated their copy. La Tienda de las Licencias is a registered Spanish company operating under this legal framework. We issue official invoices and offer a lifetime guarantee on every licence.

What is the difference between SQL Server Standard and Enterprise?

SQL Server Standard supports up to 128 GB of RAM and 24 cores per instance (32 in the 2025 version). This is sufficient for the vast majority of enterprise workloads. SQL Server Enterprise removes those limits and adds advanced features such as full Always On with automatic multi-node failover, native data compression, table partitioning and unlimited In-Memory OLTP. Enterprise is required in mission-critical environments with high availability or servers with more than 24 cores.

What is the latest version of SQL Server?

SQL Server 2025 is the most recent version, with built-in artificial intelligence and vector search capabilities. SQL Server 2022, released in November 2022, is the most mature stable version with extended support until January 2033. For most new installations, SQL Server 2022 is the recommended choice due to its stability and long support lifecycle.

Can I use this licence during a Microsoft audit?

Yes. Our licences are genuine Microsoft products with legitimate product keys. In the event of an audit, the purchase is documented with the official invoice we issue (with full tax details) and the CJEU ruling C-128/11 documentation that legally supports software resale in the EU.

How do I receive my licence after purchase?

Delivery is 100% digital and instant. Once payment is confirmed, you receive an email with your product key and instructions to download SQL Server directly from the official Microsoft servers. The complete download, installation and activation process takes less than 30 minutes.

Do I need to buy Windows Server as well?

SQL Server can run on Windows Server or compatible Linux distributions. If you already have an active Windows Server licence on your machine, you only need the SQL Server licence. If you need both, you can buy Windows Server and SQL Server from our store with the same level of savings. The combined savings versus the official Microsoft price can exceed 90%.

Does SQL Server 2016 still have support?

SQL Server 2016 has Microsoft extended support until July 2026. After that date it will no longer receive security updates. If your current installation runs SQL Server 2016, we recommend planning a migration to SQL Server 2019 or 2022 before support ends. A new licence from our store costs far less than one year of Microsoft Software Assurance.

Do you accept payments from Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia and Malaysia?

Yes. We accept local payment methods in all four countries. In Kenya you can pay with M-Pesa or Airtel Money. In Nigeria we accept bank transfers and local cards. In Indonesia you can use GoPay, OVO, DANA, virtual accounts or bank transfer. In Malaysia we support FPX online banking and e-wallets. Prices are displayed in your local currency (KES, NGN, IDR, MYR) and you pay without currency conversion fees.

Do you ship to the United Kingdom?

Yes. All licences are delivered digitally by email — there is no physical shipping involved. You receive your product key within minutes of completing your purchase, regardless of your location. UK customers can pay by credit/debit card or PayPal in GBP.

Are there volume discounts or a reseller programme?

Yes. For IT businesses, resellers and distributors we offer discounts of up to 30% on SQL Server and Windows Server through our reseller programme. For multiple licence purchases, we also offer special volume pricing. You can apply for our reseller programme on our website or contact us for a customised quote.
